Nice thread its really knowledgeable thread.
I'm using IDM (Internet Download Manager) for downloading videos from youtube and another website also. It is the best software for downloading videos.
I use dvd video soft to download every content in what form I want from youtube.
Site not working  Sad
I've been using Freemake Downloader for years. You've got the choice of downloading the file and its extension as it is, or you can download and convert on the fly. I download as is, because it's faster that way, then if if need to, I can use the[separate] Freemake Converter(or whoever you choose) to convert the video file to, say, an mp3 file. It worked great for oldies cds I made for a class reunion. It has a Download history, which is a convenient way to find an old download quickly without having to go to your Favorites or Bookmarks long as you don't delete any of them, voluntarily, or get your hdd reformatted. It is a shareware, but you will get a nag screen to consider an "upgrade" of one sort or another. Since there is no obligation or requirement to upgrade, to continue use of the down loader, just close the nag screen. The Converter will create a video for you, ready to burn to disc, as easy as the old Windows Movie Maker.
I used KeepVid for years (, but it has gone to a Pay application.

Of course the XBMC YouTube plugin can download videos to disk can't it?

It can download HD videos from YouTube, Vimeo, Facebook, Crunchroll, Lynda, etc.
It also helps to download from Spotify, deezer etc.
It support batch download and download without ads.
It even can directly download to MP4, AVI, MP3 etc.
Also, Allavsoft appears to be a purchase item.
