If this is a standard XBMCBunutu install it should start automatically.

Rather than invoking init scripts through /etc/init.d, use the service(8)
utility, e.g. service avahi-daemon status
Since the script you are attempting to invoke has been converted to an
Upstart job, you may also use the status(8) utility, e.g. status avahi-daemon
avahi-daemon start/running, process 850
