You could consider repinning an Inteset CIR so you can turn it on and off via the remote!
I have one myself and setup with a harmony remote, works perfectly as an RC6 receiver. Mounting was a little tricky with my case, though sounds like you already have somewhere to mount, presumably with a window for the IR sensor - any chance of taking some pictures of this part of the case?
