I'm currently running 4.4.4. and 4.3.3 Any advantages for the atv updating to 5.1?

Agreed... but for those without a choice, at least ATV 5.0.1 has an untethered jailbreak as of today.

I upgraded for the AirPlay improvements, and also just for kicks. If I don't like it I'll just downgrade back to 4.4.4.

Only if you want the feature updates from the Apple side of things (Netflix improvements, MLB, AirPlay mirroring, etc).

I'm mainly curious if there are any performance gains or losses with the new Firmware?

For performance (note this is just from what other people have said, and is not any kind of scientific measurement): 4.3 > 5.0.1 (aka 5.1.1, newest version) > 5.0 (aka 5.1) = 4.4.4
