I've done some further testing.
I formatted the SD card with OSMC and fresh installed it. I deleted all the NFO files created by ME from my TV Shows folder. I ran a scrape via the Kodi scraper (The TVDB) and lo all the thumbs were showing up. So this is definitely a problem with ME and not any of the other software. As I said in my previous post I can't help but point to the fact that ME doesn't include a URL to the poster image in the NFO files it creates.
On a different subject, but another possible bug. While I was doing this testing I had to run bulk scrapes using ME. I've found that when I selected more than 10 movies and ran the scrape any more than 10 movies did not retain all of the information. Here's an NFO from one of them
