Even though this is bumping a thread from 2005, it's all still relevant to the current version of XBMC. XBMC currently lacks an elegant solution to editing pre-existing basic playlists (wiki). There is an add-on that basically supplemented XBMC's internal basic playlists, and those were editable. Maybe someone can use that as a basis for something that is more hooked into XBMC's internals? http://addons.xbmc.org/show/script.simpleplaylists/
