Network Sharing via the Windows SMB option
#1
Hi

It's been a while since I last set up an old lap top in my bedroom to share the hdds off my main htpc in the front room.

I've searched for a tutorial on how to set up both machines, but can't for the life of me find one.

Can someone either tell me how to go about sharing, or point me to a tutorial please?

Many thanks

Sure, you can start with the SMB (wiki) wiki page.

That doesn't seem to work. I don't even get the following:

Right click the Drive or Folder you wish to share. Choose “Sharing and Security”

The mind boggles as to why I can't remember it.

Windows 7 sp 1.

When I last shared my HDD with the laptop and over the network, the name of it would be a random set of letters and numbers.

Now it just shows as the d drive with nothing at the end.

I would really appreciate your valued help with this one.

Many thanks

Do you have file and printer sharing enabled? Goto Control Panel -> Network and Sharing Center -> Change Advanced Sharing Settings -> "Turn on file and printer sharing". I personally turn off "password protected sharing" and turn off the "home group" option.

This appears to be a broader Windows "how-to" support issue rather than XBMC specific. Perhaps this can be helpful: http://windows.microsoft.com/is-IS/windo...essentials

Success. I think it may of been a problem with the laptop in the bedroom.

I've just done a fresh install of windows 7 and it found the shared folder straight away.

Thanks all for your help. I appreciate it Smile
