When I go to shutdown XBMC it freezes and I have to press ctrl-alt-dlt to go to the programs to end it. What can be done about this?

You won't get any help without a debug log, since it's virtually impossible to know what is going on without it.

Enable debug log (wiki)ging in XBMC; shutdown XBMC; when it freezes, kill it as you've done previously; locate your debug log (wiki) (xbmc.log) and upload its contents to www.pastebin.com or www.xbmclogs.com ; post the assigned URL link for your uploaded log here with your reply so other members can review it for possible clues.

hmm ok I found the issue.. it was not with XBMC it was with another program I was running conflicting with it. When I turned the program off XBMC shutdown just fine.
