Output 5.1 to 3x s/pdif pcm possible?
#1
Hi,
is it possible to output a 5.1 audio signal in pcm over 3x s/pdif? Whatever the audio-encoding of the source might be.

The output device could be a "rme hammerfall".
The idea:
source -> xbmc -> 3xs/pdif pcm -> 3x "standard" dac -> 5.1 amp

If possible, would it make any difference to have xmbc on windows or linux (or ...)?

Thanks,
Alex

imo its not possible as Xbmx doesn't support multiple output devices. The easier solution is to transcode the 5.1 PCM to AC3.

Actually the goal would more be to transcode AC3 to 5.1 PCM.

Could a virtual 5.1-device be created via routing in ALSA and then used by xbmc?
This virtal device would route to three real two-channel devices...

Then you'd need to use HDMI - spdif is 2.0 only for PCM.
