Just copy your Thumbnails folder to your network location. The problem is that if you reinstall XBMC you will start with an empty Textures13.db that won't know about any previously cached artwork stored on your network, so it will be cached again (overwriting what is already there). To backup Textures13.db, just copy it somewhere then restore it when required.
