If You Remove the HD, Where Does Crystalbuntu Live?
#1
Many tutorials for installing the Broadcom CrystalHD BCM970015 Video Decoder for AppleTV 1080p mention removing the hard drive. Dumb question: If you remove the hard drive, where does the CrystalBuntu OS reside? I personally don't see why someone would do this and rely on either an external USB drive or a streaming source like a NAS. They say it's to render the ATV dead-quiet (assuming you also remove the fan), but maybe it's my advancing age, but I don't hear it making a whole lot of noise.

Replace it with an SSD, perhaps?

In this case, the guy was talking about removing it (along with the internal fan) to render the unit noiseless. I guess CrystalBuntu would have to be booting off a USB device like a thumb drive in that case.

Or perhaps net booting?

I use the internal HDD on mine, and I don't hear it.

I guess the answer is you don't need to remove the drive? Wink
