Hello, my mother has a flat screen TV, but it is not a "smart" tv. But it does have HDMI. I am wondering if there is anyway that we can set it up so that my mom has some cable channels AND LIVE local TV as well, like the news using wireless internet. Anything that we can buy that would do this? Is XBMC capable of doing this? Please help!!!

If you want cable TV channels, then you'll need a box from your cable provider.

Depends on the cable provider. I receive all my locals in HD and a lot of cable channels in HD and SD without a cable box. I just let the TVs tuner deal with it.
You can use XBMC in conjunction with a PVR backend and use one of the PVR addons. You will still need a cable provider and a TV tuner card or something like a HDHomerun.
