What is the simplest thing I can do so that if someone comes over to my place and watches shows in XBMC, it won't disturb my watched status? Ideally I'd like them to see all shows as unwatched so they can do whatever they want. Separate users? This situation will only be about 1% of the time XBMC is used, so I would like it to be pretty seamless the rest of the time, and I just do something special when needed.

I'm thinking maybe something like a separate user called "guest" that I switch to when needed, but otherwise the master user is always used and logs in automatically.

Set up a separate profile with playcountminimumpercent set to 101 in the profile's advancedsettings.xml (wiki) file. This will never mark an item as watched.

Excellent, I needed this as well. We have a dog sitter who loves xbmc but she keeps messing up my watched status :dodgy:
