A call for skinners to help Confluence
#91
(2013-08-23, 16:21)jjd-uk Wrote: Level 0 may needed with an eye to the future, because if I recall correctly there was some talk that the settings re-factor may expand out into other areas such as side bar controls, if this were to happen then perhaps the view settings would be Level 0 candidates, so a kids profile could be completely locked down but they would still be able to change the media views to suit themselves.

That's a cool idea but profile settings/options seems as a much better place to take care about it, without a need to pollute system settings.

Why does each sub menu in the settings need it's own toggle ?

If you have a basic and advanced option i would simply put that toggle option somewhere in the main settings area.
If you are in basic mode all advanced settings are hidden throughout all of the different settings category's

A user does not need to know at all times whether or not he/she is in advanced or basic mode...

If I am an advanced user i will find that toggle mode no matter where it's hidden away Smile

That's exactly how it works at the moment

I think that's the same as my thinking now, do away with level switching in the GUI and have Master Profile as Advanced level with the more advanced settings behind another selectable tab in each of the settings screens as discussed above.

The different setting levels would then belong to Profiles where each Profile would be assigned a setting level:

0= Basic/Kiosk
1= Standard ( no Advanced tabs)
3= Advanced (default for Master)

sorry but don't like that idea. i don't want to switch to master first to change the settings level of another user

and that won't work Tongue
each profile might want their own different advanced settings. i know i would want that.

That makes sense for me.

I'm not sure that's a sensible idea but we need profiles rework in that case, not settings. Settings window should mirror what you've chosen in profile settings.

True, but each setting window still needs a reset switch, which is why I suggested this: http://forum.xbmc.org/showthread.php?tid...pid1490363

It would be a bit redundant for the settings level switch, but in a good way.

Same here. I use profiles for things like when my laptop is on a different wifi connection, or when I want a blank library for testing something in particular. I don't use profiles for restricting access.

Okay i can see that each settings window would need a reset option... Why not just add that as regular menu item in the bottom of all the windows ? Keep it in the same style as the other toggle settings or what not, just let it be the very last item on each window. Maybe with an extra space or something similar. Some times simple is just enough...

Sure. I've just deleted kids profile and upgraded to nightly. I've modded Confluence to always show settings level toggle button. Finally I have explained wife and kids not to go into settings and if they do go (by mistake, of course) I've told them not to touch the red button (I made it more prominent so I don't get support questions like "where is my setting").

Now kids are happy to fiddle with basic settings - they said they like it better than watching movies.

It would be neat having this on home page as well. Level 0 could be showing only settings (something to play with) and quit. Porn section should definitely go to advanced level, labeled "do(n't)* touch me!"

*or "do touch me" when xbmc recognizes advanced users. (This one is easy, proper couch potato weights over 100kg but should probably be adjustable via advanced settings.xml)

I think I'll go watch a movie now, it was an interesting conversation.

So? Having the setting levels done in Profiles wouldn't affect you as presumably you'd set all profiles to setting level 3 or whatever the maximum is.

Sorry but I just don't see the need to be able to switch setting levels on the fly, I see it as a install activity that will be done once and left. Do away with level switching for Standard & Advanced by sticking advanced settings in another child screen accessed from the main setting screens, then you've got all settings easily accessed on first install without needing to know about setting levels by the inexperience.

Hiding settings like this is a stupid idea. There, i've said it.

Most of us will switch immediately to most advanced mode. Rest, the dumb people will continue being dumb and will still have troubles with the application and keep hammering forums with dumb questions and having non-working setups.

If you want simple use Plex etc.

I think there was some misunderstanding. I thought you meant that master profile would have to be used to changed "advanced" settings. Still, I don't see the point in restricting it to the master profile since you can already lock settings using master lock (wiki), and thus restrict it to master profile that way.

I still think this is the best option: http://forum.xbmc.org/showthread.php?tid...pid1490363

For that one, even if people don't need access to the switch all the time, I don't see it being any kind of major issue even if it's more accessible. Any kind of hiding seems bad to me. It's about indication of what is advanced and standard, not hiding what is advanced. This isn't even "that advanced" for XBMC, as these are settings that we've always exposed to users before.

As for using a second page for advanced settings, I don't totally oppose that idea, but I get the impression that it would take longer and wouldn't necessarily be better or worse.

With the next PR merge window coming up for XBMC, I would really like to see something go in so we can get the ball moving. No one seemed to object to the idea of at least having a level indicator saying what level is currently displayed, so let's start there. Would any skinner (`Black? someone?) be willing to show what needs to be changed or maybe even open a pull request for Confluence (which is just under the rest of the files for XBMC at http://github.com/xbmc/xbmc )? We don't necessarily need the color codes, if it's too time consuming, but at least the label at the top:
