OK after MUCH research I found no working way to sort this. So here is a dirty method...
- Wipe your system and reinstall with the 13.4 minimal iso. This has a functional USB keyboard driver.
- sudo apt-get install openssh-server
- Connect via SSH from another machine to your XBMC console
- sudo apt-get update
- sudo apt-get upgrade
- sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
- sudo apt-get install update-manager-core
- sudo do-release-upgrade
- reboot and you will now have 13.10 with working keyboard
- Carry on following the guide on page 1
If you are starting from windows then rufus (http://rufus.akeo.ie/) will actually make a nice working usb stick for you..
Only thing you have to remember is to say no to install grub on master boot record and instead choose /dev/sdb as it will default to dev/sda which is the usb stick.
