After various failed tries with Windows/XBMCbuntu/openSuSE I managed to get XBMC running on my little fanless Shuttle xs35gs-v3l. And it runs so smothly... :-)
One last issue I'vo got with the sound which is mono only:
root@xbmc:~# amixer
Simple mixer control 'IEC958',0
Capabilities: pswitch pswitch-joined
Playback channels: Mono
Mono: Playback [on]
Does anybody know how to switch to 5.1 ?
THX!

You are right. It's not mono. In fact it is 2-channel audio (left and right). If I play a 5.1 movie I don't hear any sounds which are supposed to be played on e.g. center channel. That's quite bad because it's mostly voices :-)
I have to mention that the computer has 2 audio cards (Intel and ATI), the Intel card is completely switched off.
In the settings screen (system > audio) I don't see all the configuation items I see in guisettings.xml. Don't know if this is an issue? Here's the audiooutput section of my guisettings.xml:
<audiooutput>
<ac3passthrough>true</ac3passthrough>
<ac3transcode>true</ac3transcode>
<audiodevice>ALSA:hdmi:CARD=HDMI,DEV=0</audiodevice>
<channels>8</channels>
<config>2</config>
<dtshdpassthrough>false</dtshdpassthrough>
<dtspassthrough>false</dtspassthrough>
<eac3passthrough>false</eac3passthrough>
<guisoundmode>0</guisoundmode>
<normalizelevels>true</normalizelevels>
<passthrough>false</passthrough>
<passthroughdevice>ALSA:hdmi:CARD=HDMI,DEV=0</passthroughdevice>
<processquality>30</processquality>
<samplerate>48000</samplerate>
<stereoupmix>false</stereoupmix>
<streamsilence>1</streamsilence>
<truehdpassthrough>false</truehdpassthrough>
</audiooutput>
What's wrong with my config?
