I skipped the idea of testing OE, couldn't be arsed. Instead I did what I usually do when I have audio problems on linux boxes; I uninstalled pulseaudio. Surround works perfectly fine with alsa, so I have to say that I'm very happy with my NUC now.
The only issue I have now is that I wanted to test booting from USB, but the stick I have is horrible, so I've ordered an mSATA drive instead. Otherwise it's a great piece of hardware. Too bad about the lack of support for the built in IR receiver in linux though.
I actually had to reconfigure alsa to get sound working outside of XBMC, so for anyone having issues with alsa in the Haswell i3 NUC, put this in your .asoundrc:
pcm.!default {
type plug
slave {
pcm "plughw:0,3"
}
}
