My powerbutton still works fine. And my Harmony One can power on the Nuc just like it did before disabling wake-LAN. The shutdown problem seems to be related to the version of the Linux kernel that OpenElec uses. For me this bypass has solved my problem for now.
I'm actually waiting for the Samsung EVO msata drives to be available so I can just install Windows 8.1. I've tried Windows 8.1 on my laptop connected to my TV and the large Retro icons work great on a TV.
