I wouldn't buy a pre-built NAS ever, FreeNAS or unRAID on cheap hardware is way way better IMO. I've been using unRAID for at least 7 years or so and haven't ever lost data (shrug). 30TB of storage currently...
I really like the FreeNAS project, but having fiddled with it for quite some time I really enjoyed my Synology NAS for a few reasons:
- Nice UI
- Able to reach 1 Gbit/s speeds out of the box
- The box itself consumes approx 5 watts (plus the drives of course, but that would be the same regardless of the platform)
FreeNAS is cheaper and gives you more flexibility, but it takes some effort to find and tune a platform that will saturate a GigE link with a power consumption that low (5W). Supermicro has a promising J1900 motherboard for NAS use though: X10SBA.
IMHO, Synology and QNAP both are about as good as it gets when it comes to NAS boxes.
As this is getting off topic, let's not continue here.
