Not sure why you need to saturate a GigE link for one client as this guy seems to have.
But it is a matter of personal preference, convenience and cost (of nas) vs flexibility and cost (of power).
There are environmental concerns both ways. Buying a NAS and ditching the tower creates another discarded box that should perhaps be recycled/resued. OTOH the NAS uses less electricity so that goes the other way.
Personally I like being in control of my computer systems, so I would simply install ubuntu server on the tower and manage my own self built nas without synology or whoever governing what I can and can't run, but at the end of the day it's a personal decision and also completely off the topic of this thread.
