Unfortunately it's not just a case of fixing up the patch as the OpenELEC build system uses the standard patch (not git apply) command, and doesn't appear to support the creation of binary files (it outputs "Hmm... Ignoring the trailing garbage." after successfully applying the first hunk), so it fails to create the gif image even though the xml has been modified. Leaving it out for now...
