They are required for Pi audio sink (used by paplayer and dvdplayer).
They are not required for omxplayer.

If there is a way to determine which player is actually in use during playback (top just indicates xbmc.bin) I'll try it later. I note that, unlike other places, where the contextual menu has a "play using…." option that identifies the default player and allows you to choose a different player, there is not such option when playing back recordings from the (myth) PVR addon.
