Android New Android KitKat Quad Core CPU/Octocore GPU TV boxes out in 16 days, thoughts?

The only way to make it look good is turn off amcodec under video options, but when I do that xbmc crashes on all MKV files. Alonso tried changing to software instead of hardware decoding then HD is choppy. Any suggestions?

Try libstagefright, seems to be stable enough for me on all kinds of files and better quality (noise, colours) than amcodec. Amcodec seems low quality and at the same time buggy on xvid avis.

I've created a PR ( https://github.com/xbmc/xbmc/pull/4815 ) to disable h/w decoding of those on Android.
H/w decoding of those is too troublesome for the benefit.

What about SW decoding of hi-res xvid and mp4 then? Would 1080p xvids/mp4s be handled good enough with only SW decoding? I think the best approach is a better amcodec!

1) 1080p xvid is stupid
2) Only SD h/w decoding is disabled
3) Go ask amlogic for better h/w decoders / scaler

1) I have lots of 720p brrips in xvid. And some of them are in 1080p. The net is full of them and major release groups still do them. What exactly do you mean "stupid"?
2) No point as almost all 720p xvids I have stutter with amcodec enabled in my M8 Beelink (same as Tronsmart Vega S82). So by enabling SW decoding for SD you ignore a lot of 720p/1080p xvids out there leaving them to struggle with SW (would they?)
3) If I could I would. If you read the freaktab forum you'll see complaints about the amlogic codec. Till something happens on their part I will be using libstagefright for all my collection (hi-res xvids, x264s, mkvs) as they play fine with it.

It's a real shame we have an AMLOGIC device that works better with open source h/w coders/decoders such as libstagefright/mediacodec or rely on SW decoding.

1) For anything >= 720p xvid/divx/mp4 are just inefficient. That's why h264 was invented. The scene is actually moving to h264 for SD, too.
2) Ok. I obviously don't have any 720p xvid to test. Could it be because of 1) ? Note that the avi container is a PITA, too.
3) Yep, we agree. I thought you spoke about the XBMC amlcodec.

Note that libstagefright is using exactly the same h/w decoders behind the scene. Not so long ago, amlogic didn't support the libstagefright/mediacodec api at all, actually.
I assume the difference is in the h/w fb scaler, which seem to have a hard time doing 480p -> 1080p properly.

They already have :-) (for tv shows) in April of 2012

All sd tv episodes switched from xvid/mp3/avi to x264/aac/mp4

I tried using libstagefright but it's crashing on HD videos. Sad

Could you please post samples of the crashing HD videos? I want to try playing them on my Beelink so that we see if it's a libstage problem or not.

Thanks

This is M8 related stuff, if so where do I start for Linux xbmc

It is just the kernel. You linked to an amlogic kernel, I just pointed out that, that kernel also get's released by Amlogic itself.

Has anyone received a Minix X8 yet? I'm curious how the stock releases (nightlies or 13.1) work. I also want to know if netflix works in HD.

Netflix won't be in HD because it is not the box it's the app and only available in HD on Samsung nexus 7 and the fire TV.
