It looks like a fix should be possible, by iterating over the items to be removed (as is already done for movies and episodes and in fact pretty much all of the other tables, but for some reason not for tvshows and tvshowlinkpath), so MySQL may have just dodged another bullet.
Trakt.tv is the other way to share watched statuses, although I've never used it myself. From a quick read, I think Trakt.tv is designed to work best with local libraries, so you'll be back to scanning for updates on each of your clients, although the clients should have synced watched statuses as long as they all have the same media metadata etc. Personally, I'd stick with MySQL as long as you can...
