Yes, so my question remains unanswered:
Quote:But I've never cloned an SSD on a Linux-based system before. Have anyone done this with their Chromebox before? I've been thinking about buying this M.2 to USB adapter. Is is as simple as inserting the new SSD into this adapter and run a disk cloning program on the Chromebox?

If cloning is the best option here, does anybody have a recommendation for a cloning tool that "just works"?

Use clonezilla. Boot from USB, create image of current SSD, save to network drive or flash drive. Swap SSDs, boot clonezilla, restore image, choose option to expand to fit to disk. No need for a M.2/USB adapter if you have a USB large enough for the image.

I'm using a CN60 with Coreboot and Libreelec 9.2.6. Everything is working fine, as long as I turn on the TV (Vizio M55-F0), then turn on the Asus CN60.

If I reboot the Chromebox when the TV is off, I get no screen upon turning on the TV. I suspect that the CN60 defaults to DP and not HDMI when rebooting without a display.

Is there a way to force the system to use HDMI when rebooting (maybe using a startup script?). I tried playing with xrandr, but when the display is off, I get "disconnected" for all device, and when I try to use the xrandr --output HDMI1 --mode 0x126, I get an error (when the display is connected, I can set the 0x126 mode, which in my case is 1920x1080p60). Output from xrandr --verbose with the display off is here https://paste.kodi.tv/omorebayik

Is there a way to boot in HDMI, FHD mode? Even when I turn on the TV then the CN60, most of the times the default screen gets reverted to 4K, which doesn't really work well on such an old Chromebox

EDIT: I searched more past posts with similar problems, and I found something that might possibly apply. Is this a case where I should use a custom EDID as per https://wiki.libreelec.tv/configuration/edid? In other cases I saw mentions of a custom BIOS with hardcoded 1080p resolution, which would also work for me

the custom EDID -- more like saving/loading the display's EDID regardless of attachment state -- should allow you to use a startup script to set the output resolution to 1080p60 regardless of connection state. Both of these are covered on the Chromebox wiki page

thanks for confirming, Matt. Will follow those steps now that I know it's the right path.

Thanks for all you do for these devices and the community, btw. While looking for more info, I noticed that on your page https://mrchromebox.tech/#support, the "Kodi Chromebox wiki page" link points to https://kodi.wiki/view/Chromebox, which is a dead end. The right page is now archived under https://kodi.wiki/view/Archive:Chromebox (which is the one you also have in your signature here). I thought you might want to know...

Leaving this here for time travelers from the future finding this thread. I executed getedid create and after a reboot, everything works beautifully. Even when the TV is in standby mode my chromebox sees it as active and I can set resolutions from a script. I got initially sidetracked by the long explanation here https://wiki.libreelec.tv/configuration/edid thinking I needed to issue multiple commands, but the getedid script does everything automatically on a chromebox.

I've had this chromebox sitting around for years unused after loading kodi standalone on it.  is there a way to load windows 10 on it?  i know i read articles about that in the past but I have no idea how to do it if kodi is already instatalled.  any guides?

TLDR:

* boot Linux from USB (ubuntu, eg)
* run my Firmware Utility Script
* install/update UEFI firmware
* reboot
* install Windows from USB
* install Speedfan and set to auto mode, set to run on startup

This is a great guide, but I went out and bought 2 brand new 32gb usb sandisk thumb drives, successfully wrote ubuntu to usb with etcher and there is no option hitting escape to boot to the usb.  it boots directly to kodi every time.  i've tried 2 usb thumb drives so no idea what i'm doing wrong.  thanks

sounds like it's not detecting the USB for some reason. Try another port, worst case you can always pull the SSD and see if that forces the USB to be detected / to boot

yeah i've tried all 4 ports.  no idea what could be wrong.  should I try another program other than Etcher to write Ubuntu to the usb?  its definitely not detecting the usb unless i'm doing something wrong. there is no message to hit escape when it boots up before getting to kodi so I assume its not even being detected and even if i hit escape multipe times as soon as I hit power I never see a message about hitting escape.

its been years since I've used this and I can't remember what the normal boot process said

this is purely a hardware detection issue, is has nothing to do with what is on the USB or how it was written. It's possible your USB keyboard is causing an issue, which you can verify by booting without the keyboard and ssd attached.

You can also flash the firmware directly, treating the device as if it were bricked. See https://wiki.mrchromebox.tech/Unbricking.

Again, this is purely a firmware compatibility issue.

Hi Matt, have used your scripts for years to create ChromeOS / Libreelec dual boot setups. Thanks for all the effort!

Was just wondering was there ever an option to have a Gallium OS / Libreelec dual boot setup??
Would love to give Gallium a go rather than ChromeOS but don't really want to give up Libreelec just yet Smile
