Linux ChromeBox Kodi E-Z Setup Script (LibreELEC/Linux+Kodi) [2017/02/21]
Thanks for all your guys input so far Smile I was thinking i3 but wanted to make sure I have been hearing about NetfliXBMC that uses Pipelight would that work in a setup that integrated xbmc and a linux version I would like as easy a setup as possible as my dad will be using this as well and is not tech savvy.

pipelight isn't supported under the newer versions of Chrome, so no more Netflix under Linux via Chrome/pipelight

Is there a way to install the older version of chrome that does work I will only use it for Netflix

I haven't researched it. It's a more general Chrome / Linux issue, so the OpenELEC forums or Google is likely your best bet here

For the price of the i3 box you can get a similar machine that is much more versatile. The celeron unit is really a sweet spot and IMHO the only reason to purchase the chromebox (due to it's value to performance ratio). That being said if the intel drivers get fixed and you can use hardware acceleration there is no reason at all the lower end version shouldn't handle full 3d bluray with hd audio passthrough. The hardware in bluray players that support it is quite underwhelming and processor power is not as important as hardware decoding. I would suggest upgrading to 4GB ram just due to the high bandwidth of 3d content, more headroom is always a good thing.

I have played 3d content on my Celeron version with no problems (Full hd audio and at least 35-40Mbps bitrate). Other than that my suggestion is based entirely on my opinion and subject to scrutiny by more qualified or knowledgeable members.

Script updated.

Only significant change is that the script will now persist the MAC address, device serial number, and related info (collectively referred to as Vital Product Data / VPD) by extracting it from the stock firmware and adding it to Coreboot firmware prior to flashing (all transparent to the user). Up until now, the MAC address was being set to a default value for all ChromeBoxes using my firmware.

If you've already flashed Coreboot, running the script to update will offer you the option to read it from the backup file you created (on USB) upon initial install of Coreboot.

And in the future, updates will persist the VPD from one Coreboot flash to the next.

Hi Matt,

Is it possible to use your script on a Samsung Chromebook as well, or is it strictly for the Asus chromebox?

If it is only for the Asus, does anyone know how I can dualboot Openelec onto a Chromebook?

Absolutely not.

The Samsung ChromeBooks use an ARM-based CPU, not an Intel (x86) one. Completely different architectures, firmware, etc. To date, the only ARM-based device that OpenELEC runs on is the Raspberry Pi.

The dual-boot sections of my script should work for any ChromeOS device that uses the Intel Haswell platform (Asus/HP ChromeBoxes, Acer C720, HP ChromeBook 14); The Standalone / Coreboot firmware should work on the HP ChromeBox as well as the Asus, but has not yet been confirmed.

Thanks for the heads up Matt! I have a couple friends who are interested in getting the setup and one of them had the Samsung Chromebook. I had assumed that it was Intel, but you're right, it's ARM.

Without Netflix involved Matt would my other requirements be met by the Cereron model or would I need an i3?

The celeron model will do everything else you are looking for. Netflix/Hulu/Amazon streaming will likely work best using something like PlayOn from your main PC.

Had the problem with openelec giving "loading ...." and I hadn't made a backup disk. So I went to the google chrome recovery site and tried making a usb key from my windows computer, unsuccessful on a coupla USB sticks. So I tried the same stick using the Chromebox chrome://imageburner ... recovered ChromeOS and reran the dual boot option and now bob's my uncle. great scipt!

are you sure the 2955u is fast enough for frame packed 3d? 3d sbs/ou will be fine but i was under the impression that an i3 was needed for mvc. obviously it's not possible in xbmc (yet) so somewhat moot.

I think it's probably just easiest if I require a factory reset via the recovery image prior to any dual boot setup, so I'll change the wiki and instructions in the OP.

perhaps I am not up to date on all the different 3D formats. Can you link to a sample that I can test / compare performance on the celeron vs i3?

I think furii is talking about full resolution 3D - which can be encoded as either MVC (which is an H264 1920x1080/24p feed for one eye and an additional difference stream use to generate the other eye feed from - XBMC currently doesn't handle MVC) OR slightly more oddball 1920x2160 / 3840x1080 or 2560x720 / 1280 x 1440 full-resolution SBS or TAB feeds.

Both then need to be output as frame packed HDMI (which is effectively a 1920 x 2160+a bit 3D specific HDMI resolution I believe?)
