TV is sony 50w829 - sadly the amp is a bit old with no hdmi ports

most TVs won't pass DD/DTS from an external HDMI source via their digital output. You can certainly try, and if it doesn't work just get a USB SPDIF output for the ChromeBox and connect it directly to your amp
Thanks , I didn't know they existed . Are they plug and play or is there more work involved ?
Just googled to see prices , do you have any recommendation to what to get ? Ideally don't want to spend a lot.
