So like a dummy I found the Lon video, and did the same thing he did...stuck on "Booting from Hard Disk..."

but now I cant get my USB drive to work...so how can I make another copy of the recovery media?
and what do I do to correct this?

What you mean "I can't get my USB drive to work"? You can make a copy of the recovery media from any other machine just by following the instructions/link in the wiki

I made a new recovery disk, ran the script 2 more times, and now I just let my DEV mode screen time out, and its like I started my chromebox for the first time (fresh out of the box)

but now what?

EDIT: so I checked it OpenELEC worked, and it did, but do I leave it in DEV mode? or do I take it out of DEV mode?

I'll assume you actually used the recovery media to do a factory reset, in addition to creating it.

on the dev mode boot screen, use [CTRL-L] to boot OpenELEC/Ubuntu. Once you've verified that's working, reboot and go back to ChromeOS (use [CTRL-D] to skip the timeout), re-run the script, and set your preferred default OS and boot timeout.

Hi everyone... i really need your help here and i just hope someone with more experience will guide me to solve my problem. I just got an HP chromebox (celeron model) off eBay, hoping that i will turn it into a KODI box, but i'm unable to disable the hardware write protection... i removed the screw, cleaned the contacts and everything looks great and contacts are clean and far apart, but the script still says that can't run because the hardware write protection is still enabled. What am i doing wrong here? Please people, help!!!!

1) post a picture of the WP screw area. Verify lack of continuity with a DMM if you have one.
2) from the command line, run 'sudo crossystem | grep wpsw' and post the output
3) from the command line, run 'sudo flashrom --wp-status' and post the output

No, the wiki instructions explicitly say not to.

Kinda hard to evaluate that since we have no idea what videos you are referring to, but anything post-install that isn't hardware related is best addressed in the proper forum

The OP is amazing! Quick question - for somebody with no NAS or other PC, would it be unwise to waste money on a big SSD (250/500GB) for one of these (standalone)? Or possibly a 128GB SD card (boot from SD option)?

I'm pretty sure I could survive on that little of space since I don't keep stuff for long. Just would be nice to have a fully self-sufficient setup, but would also suck to spend the extra money and have it not work.

I tried searching this but wasn't getting any luck.

I'd think an external USB-powered HDD would be the most cost effective option, but there's no reason you can't use a large internal M.2 SSD. I'd avoid an SD card for the OS for speed reasons (the SD card reader is USB2.0), but for media storage it's fine as well.

just to be clear, there's no performance issues with having the OS installed to the 16GB internal SSD, and storing your media externally, either on SD or USB-attached flash/HDD/SSD. Which makes the most sense depends on your desired capacity and portability

Gotcha. Portability / self-sufficient'ness seem to be my main concern but money-wise'ness is always there as a concern too. Such tough choices for the indecisive type.

you can't boot the internal SSD because you haven't installed a bootable OS; ChromeOS is no longer bootable since my custom firmware isn't signed with Google's crypto keys (among other reasons). Same with the ChromeOS recovery media - it boots only when running the stock firmware in recovery mode.

Just install OpenELEC, Kodibuntu, or whatever you want to run to the internal SSD and you'll be good to go

I took the pictures first and upon closer inspection something looked strange.... then i took a sharp object and cleared it as good as i could and it worked!!!! Thanks, now i have a working Openelec chromebox!!!!! You rock!!!
