For the lurkers, simply add "acpi=off" to the end of the commandline default line in /etc/default/grub like so:

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash nomdmonddf nomdmonisw nomdmonddf nomdmonisw acpi=off"
then run "update-grub" and reboot.
