Got a Turtle Beach unit and it's working perfectly: SPDIF works like a charm
On the other hand, I tried an HDMI extractor. It works perfectly fine with my Roku connected to my Panasonic projector. But when the same unit is attached to an Asus Chromebox running Openelec/Kodi (the latest official build, not 7.0/16.0), it doesn't output any sound.
If I connect the Chromebox to my Vizio TV, the HDMI extractor works: in the audio setup I can select HDMI 0, Vizio (it shows the model number). When I use the Panasonic projector, it shows HDMI 0 with nothing else after it, and there's no audio output. It's as if the Chromebox doesn't see an audio-capable HDMI device, and even if I select HDMI as the audio port, no sound is present
Something to keep in mind for people who want to use an HDMI extractor with the Chromebox. Luckily the Turtle Beach unit is as cheap as an HDMI audio extractor, so a great option
