Linux ChromeBox Kodi E-Z Setup Script (LibreELEC/Linux+Kodi) [2017/02/21]
any ideas when we can expect to try out a Kodi v17 build? Is it still too unstable? Kodi v16 introduced a thumbnail generation bug for video libraries without a scraper, so I'm stuck on v15.2 for now.

They've been available for months now, stickied in the linux/live support forum

I'll re-add the 15.2 EGL links to the wiki as an alternate option, but the script will be 16.x still.

I disagree that the average user or the majority of users won't notice the differ difference between egl and Jarvis. It's pretty clearly and immediately visible how much worse the colors and overall playback is on Jarvis. Not to mention we know what goes on behind the scenes and how much cpu cycles it saves. So I think everyone should be running egl on a chromebox but that's just me.

I'm going to run 15.2 until libreelec 8.0 stable comes out cause there isn't one reason to upgrade.

Ok I must be really daft but I don't know what forum/thread you're referring to... Huh
Is it as easy to install as your wonderful ez script? Blush

[UPDATE] Okay I found the thread! http://forum.kodi.tv/showthread.php?tid=269815

So is the idea to use your EZ script to install LibreELEC and Kodi v16.1 Final on my Chromebox, then copy one of the .tar file builds from the first post into my Chromebox Update folder and reboot?

I'm not disagreeing as to the quantifiable differences, but I do disagree as to whether the majority of Chromebox users have their system set up well enough to be able to notice without an A/B comparison. I have an ISF calibrated Panasonic GT50 Plasma, so I can assure you I do ;-)

that's probably the easiest way. As soon as LE starts releasing installation images for their pre-beta Kodi 17 builds, I'll add the option to the script.

Gotcha thanks! Maybe I'll wait for your script to add this option to make my life easier ? Just curious but what is the difference between libreelec and kodibuntu, and why choose one over the other for your script?

I don't see any reason to do that, just do a hard reset after the upgrade.

LibreELEC is a fork of / the successor to OpenELEC; Kodibuntu as a premade disto is pretty much dead.

I am still having really bad HDMI handshake issues - video just drops out and comes back in sporadically...sometimes over and over in a matter of seconds.

Should I just start from scratch and do a reinstall using your script? Is there something else that I could try?

I have changed out HDMI cables and tried a different input to my Denon receiver...

Please help - i'm at my wits end Sad

Thanks!

I've just installed the latest Milhouse libreelec builds and now I don't have to switch input back and forth on my Denon AVR-391 to get the Chrombox's video and audio to my tv.

More details please. What exactly do I need to do? Will this put me back to square one with a new install?

Just back up your existing install, then do a manual update with Milhouse's latest LE 8 / Kodi 17 build from the thread in the Linux support forum

That's exactly what I did, still learning the new skin.

Did you try plugging the Chromebox directly to your tv/monitor first?
When you do test again, if you keep having handshaking issue try clean install of another OS (people have suggested LibreElec), if the problem still exist even after testing different OS's then you should consider hardware issue (In that case use Display Port with a DP to HDMI adapter or return under warranty if possible)

Good Luck.

what's installed now, OpenELEC? unplugging/replugging the monitor may help, if not, ssh in and update the firmware but this time don't use the headless version.

I cant tell, it's new install, its trying to run your script from hard drive, and its stuck there,
On screen I see " SeaBios (version rel-1.9.8-126-g7d4d62-20160418-MattDevo)
Booting from Hard Drive.....
After that nothing happens.

ok, so if you can see that, what's the problem with booting the USB installer?
