if you booted the Ubuntu USB, you'll have to mount the EFS partition on the SSD first. Something like:
mkdir /tmp/efs
sudo mount /dev/sda1 /tmp/efs
sudo mkdir /tmp/efs/EFI/BOOT
sudo cp /tmp/efs/EFI/ubuntu/grubx64.efi /tmp/efs/EFI/BOOT/BOOTX64.efi
