I got mine to replace my ATV2.
It runs Kodi much smother and streaming is much better due to the AC network.
Side loading Kodi was easy Especially if you have a USB keyboard mouse compo that will work. (micro usb)
You can load Chrome and Gmail just like a phone/tablet.
The only down side is the remote feels cheap. Works just fine but feels like its going to break.
I give it two thumbs up.
I am using the settings below on 14.1 x86 (see link for download) http://forum.kodi.tv/showthread.php?tid=213108 and it works very well. The cachemembuffersize 0 setting writes everything to the SD flash which on the Nexus Player is very fast, and since there is only 1GB of ram. I also use advanced task manager to clear apps before launching kodi. I stream over wifi AC 5GHZ and it works well.
<advancedsettings>
<network>
<buffermode>1</buffermode>
<cachemembuffersize>0</cachemembuffersize>
<readbufferfactor>10</readbufferfactor>
</network>
</advancedsettings>
