Ok after a bunch of trial and error I am here to report that you can use an external drive that is non Fat32 i need NTFS with the Nexus player and I imagine any other android tv device. here is what you have to do:
ROOT
install stickmount - you must install a few files to the root of your nexus player just read the stickmount description if you want NTFS formatted drives to work
now you can add the drive as a source (stickmount description in the play store tells you exactly where the drive location is)
if you don't root and use stickmount you won't be able to use any other drive format but Fat32, which means you can't play big files like I needed to do.
so if you want to have all your movies/shows on an external drive plugged directly into the nexus player, or if you wanted to give a nexus player with a ton of movies to someone like i'm doing, someone that knows nothing about tech or sharing drives this is what you need to do to make it work.
