How to build a Kodi Server
#1
Hi,
I want to build a dedicated music, movie and picture server (I will not use it as a Game Server) I want to install this server into a whole house media cabinet (house under construction) so I like to idea of perhaps using a MicroPC. I expect this PC to have a SSD disk for the Kodi software. Next to the server I will have a dedicated 4TB storage with all my AV files. I'm I bit uncertain as to what hardware to buy and I'm looking for guidance here. Minimum requirement for Video, Processor, amount of RAM, etc. The house has structured wiring with a Gigabit (CAT6) network.

Kodi is not a server, it is a player. All you need for a server is file sharing software like samba. Xbmc belongs on the the media PC's attached to your TVs.

Thanks nickr.
Sorry I guess I used misleading nomenclature here. What I meant to say is a dedicated Media PC connected to my TV. It will run Kodi but the media files will be coming from a remote media storage.

Asus chromebox, Intel nuc. There are plenty of choices.

If you're looking for photo storage, maybe take a look at whs2011, with drivepool, that will get you sone data protection as well

@bkstrm, this is the setup you may want:

Option 1:
4 TB + NAS Server > Gigabit Ethernet > Kodi box > TV
......................................................> Kodi box No2 > TV
......................................................> Kodi box No3 > TV

For an easy to use NAS server have a read of this review:
http://www.cnet.com/products/wd-my-cloud-2-tb/
http://wdc.custhelp.com/app/answers/deta...ex4,-or-my
http://wdc.custhelp.com/app/answers/deta...or-my-book

For robust Kodi boxes that stay on 24/7 - I would get a bunch of standard ASUS Chromeboxes (2955U Processor) + Flirc Dongles + XBox 360 media IR remotes.
These Chromeboxes can even be mounted to the back of TV's and the Flirc IR receivers are very sensitive and work well from behind TV's.
You could even use Amazon Fire TV's or Raspberry Pi's etc - if you want to do it cheaper for the Kodi client boxes.

Media Libraries can then be shared using UPnP or MySQL.

Option 2: (PC Server)
otherwise you are talking about a Plex Media server that can Transcode video stored on the external storage/NAS and network the media streams to various capable TV's and cheap media Boxes around the house.

Option 3: (PC Server)

Option 4: (PC Server for Netflix, Hulu, DRM content etc)

Pros / Cons of Chromeboxes vs Fire TV's see the signature below.

There is a serverside mysql trick to sync databases between your kodi boxes but it's not as easy as a one click installation.
Correct me if i'm wrong but i think you need to run the same version on all your boxes to get the sync to work :-s

Is there any tricks to get KODI boxes work as logitech squeezeboxes losslessly (no transcode from flac to crapy mp3) ?

Yes I believe the same version is required.

Quote: Logitech Media Server ..... It supports a large number of audio formats including MP3, FLAC, WAV, Ogg, and AAC, as well as transcoding..

I have a Squeezebox3 but I would think any hardware capable running Squeezelite or Squeeeslave to receive lossless streams would work.

Flac lossless streaming to a Squeezelite client box is confirmed in this thread from the developer:

There is also the XSqueeze, a GUI interface add-on for XBMC / Kodi that also installs Squeezelite or Squeezeslave.

I personnally have a freenas server (6x 3TB HD RAIDZ2, 32GIG Ram, AMD A6), Cat6 wired house, and various media devices throughout the house.
Freenas also has a mysql jail on it for shared database for XBMC..
Freenas also provide other very usefull plugin for various tasks

Freenas --> Switch --> Zotac Nano Box - Win7 - XBMC 13.1
--> Minix Neo X8 - KitKat
--> Various PC - Linux, Windows, Etc..
--> Wifi --> Mobile device, laptop, tablet, etc..

I like having a central storage server that is capable of providing data to multiple devices without a hitch, my setup isn't cheap but it's well worth it...
I plan on adding another 6 HD in the near future..
