Intel NUC - Broadwell (5th Generation CPU)
#16
the performance of the new Nuc with i3 is quite similar to the previous i5. Nor does it appear that the new Nuc change in both performance and power consumption, no?

although it seems that the new i3 will Nuc with the price of $ 300 / € and above with i5 is more expensive:

Do the new Broadwell NUCs definitely not have HDMI 2.0 outputs?

Looks good, I might get one of these.

I don't think there is much difference to the old version though. It has Intel onboard 5500 instead of 5000 thats about it.

Anyone know anything about the haupagge tuner add-on? Now that could be very interesting!

The lack of HDMI 2.0 doesn't bother me on these cause I assume we can always get DP to HDMI 2 adapter later on. I have a concern about the upcoming x265. I've been reading that Skylake will have hardware decoding, and that Broadwell still relies on software. I've been holding out to buy one of these new Broadwell i5's for a while, going to do a new HTPC setup with a Ceton external tuner and Kodi.

My question now is how quickly will it take for x265 to take over the encoding community? I played that x265 test file on my main comp and I have a Haswell i7 4790k (4.0GHz Quad) and my CPU usage spiked greatly to play it. I think even a new dual-core i5 might struggle.

I almost can't imagine waiting another year for a Skylake NUC but I don't want to spend $700 on one of these if they are semi-useless in a year.

Was anyone around when x264 came out, how long did it take to basically displace XviD?

Its completely pointless waiting for x265 support. I don't see any mainstream media encoded like that now or in the near future.

Your talking about something that may or may not happen in the next 5 years Wink

Personally I think H.265/HEVC will take off much faster than H.264 as it'll be needed for efficient delivery of 4K content particularly over the web, for example Netflix 4K already uses H.265 and Sky in the UK are testing use of H.265 for 4K, see
