If you have a look here http://kodi.wiki/view/Playercorefactory.xml , you'll notice that video resolution is one of the attributes you can use to build rules for playercorefactory. As such, there should not be any need to rename files in order to choose a different player for 4K material. You need to rename files if you want to build rules based on framerate, because that's not available as an attribute for rules building.

BUT

but in the wiki 4K is not listed as a resolution for the videoresolution attribute, which is why I was wondering whether it had been updated to include it or not.
