better of sacking off madvr for 4k stuff, i have all my 4k stuff names 4k.mkv which opens in a MPC-BE, please smoothly and hardware decodes, you 970 should be able to hardware decode outside of DSPLAYER as long as you use the standard renderer.
Use KODI DS just for 1080p and 720p stuff and use an external player for 4k, hopefully madvr will get updated at some point and we'll be able to hardware decide 4k stuff.
