Kodi DSPlayer – DirectShow Player for Windows
(2018-08-24, 12:39)entourage2111 Wrote: Hi Warner, the subtitles are part of the MKV file I'm playing and are PGS. Disabling D3D11 didn't help.

I spent quite a few hours last night trying to find a pattern in the issue. Here's what I found.

I play 1080p files on NGU Sharp Very High. Usually no issues, but when I enable the black bar detection, render queue drops to 1-2/8 after 60 seconds of play. When I select NGU high, I found that the issue disappeared. Is this just a graphic card limitation? I'm surprised considering the 1080ti is the best card atm and I thought it would be able to milk 1080p on very high?

With 4K, I run on NGU High. Last night I found that movies filmed in 1.78:1 gave the same issue even without black bar detection. All movies filmed in this ratio (Spiderman 1, Justic League, DK Trilogy, Interstellar), led to a fall in the render queue after 60 seconds of play and infinite dropped frames.

Strangely, films that were 2.39:1 or similar plays on NGU high perfectly. Is this normal? Does it really take more processing power to work with 1.78:1 images?

If so, is there a way to set a rule in MadVR to select NGU medium with 16:9 movies and NGU high for everything else? Right now, I use a rule between 1080p and 2160p like you explain in the tutorial you referenced. I would like a rule within this to select 2160p and then determine whether it will be NGU high or low.

I hope that makes sense. Thanks Warner.
It does seem like a processing issue. Did you try MPC-BE to see if the issue disappears? It is still not clear if the problem is related to XySubFilter and DSPlayer.

Black bar detection runs on the CPU, but this could slow down the GPU. Movies with a 16:9 aspect ratio require more processing than 2.39:1 movies because there are more pixels. This shouldn't be an issue with your GPU if rendering times are reasonable. Try playing with the CPU and GPU queues in general settings to see if you can smooth things out and get the queues to fill. I would try both higher and lower.

I would drop wasted processing like Error Diffusion dithering. But you may want to create special profiles if the issue not related to the subtitle filter.

There are three values: AR, uncroppedAR, encodedAR

Example:

if (AR = 16:9) "16:9"
else "Other"

Yes, it's normal. More pixels to process require more computing power.

There's definitely a way to achieve what you seek. Read this https://forum.doom9.org/showpost.php?p=1...ostcount=3 and you'll find all relevant information on how to write rules in madVR to select profiles based (in your case) on resolution and aspect ratio.
For troubleshooting and bug reporting please make sure you read this first (usually it's enough to follow instructions in the second post).

Thanks for reply!Tried that but didn't help. I have regular KODI installed from Windows store, can DS Player version on the same PC? Is 32bits the right version? (I saw 64bits unstable).
Disable fullscreen exclusive mode in both DSPlayer and madVR. Set the number of frame presented in advacnce to the same number in both DSPlayer and madVR. Did you do anything odd in LAV Video besides change the method of hardware acceleration?

The 64-bit build is stable. I don't think it will fix your problem, but who knows. Try a portable installation of 64-bit DSPlayer to see if there is a conflict with your existing Kodi installation.

After that, provide a debug log. It could say something that you are missing.
Hi again
I tried to install x64 version of KODI Dsplayer and reinstalled MadVR, keep all settings default in KODI except to use MadVR instead of EVR.
In both pre-rendered frames are 8, and full screen exclusive mode is disabled. When I play a movie it starts with a static image and then crash after 2 seconds.
Please see the debug log from Kodi:

 The debug log seem to cut-off right at the good part. Is it possible to try a portable installation of DSPlayer as linked in my previous post and eliminate Emby for Kodi? That is the only thing odd about your setup. I assume you set up your sources using path substitution as discussed here: 222576 (thread).

 The madVR log is ridiculously long. It is hard to make sense of it.

If the player is crashing, this is the last thing it says before it crashes:

00008448.522 VSyncEvl CVSync::Evaluate(self: 0000020A74F1CE30) -> too big gap in VSync detection data to calculate new display refresh rate

I don't know if that is an error or not. Can you disable refresh rate switching in both Kodi and madVR?

Completely turn off madVR settings management in DSPlayer (set to "Never"). That is the only thing I could think of that could be causing an issue, where DSPlayer is having some issue loading madVR settings from its database. Also try resetting madVR to its defaults in the madVR installation folder.

I have never heard of anyone having crashes with madVR in DSPlayer but not MPC. I don't know what the problem could be.

Was a crash log created by madVR? Is that were the attached log came from?

If you were desperate to use DSPlayer, you would have to take your logs to madshi: http://bugs.madshi.net/view_all_bug_page...dummy=bla/

If you do that, he would probably blame DSPlayer, but you could try.

Can you take one last attempt at creating a DSPlayer log by using the method outlined here where you include the pdb file linked on the first post of the DSPlayer thread? That might enable more information to be included in the log.

Is  some of you  guys using KODI DS Player together with a tablet remote app?

Someimes I get a weird pink picture when I start a movie with one of the ipad remote apps (Sybu, Kyra or Constellation). When I start it directly on my htpc via kodi dsplayer it alwas works fine. Seems that a remote a is starting a movie in a different way... Any Idea what's causing this problems?

btw I am using latest dplayer with madvr and a gtx 1070

That sounds like some sort of bug with DSPlayer. I don't know that it was ever tested with one of those remote apps. Unfortunately, I don't know of any fix and there is no active developer. The best we can hope for are infrequent updates without any official technical support. iRule might work, but it is probably expensive. A Harmony remote or any normal IR remote will work.

Are there any success stories with DS Player, and Input stream addons like Netflix, or Amazon?  I would really like to use this branch but I need at least Amazon to work.  Thanks.

It should work if there is v18. No word on when or if there will be a v18.

It does seem like a processing issue. Did you try MPC-BE to see if the issue disappears? It is still not clear if the problem is related to XySubFilter and DSPlayer.

 Sorry for the late reply, I've had my hands full with work over the past few days. I've not tried with MPC as I fear the process to get MadVR working with MPC might be quite long (it took me quite a while to get things working well with dsplayer). I can confirm however that the issue is not related to the subtitles as I have the same issue without black bar detection in 16:9 movies.

I've given up on running 16:9 movies on high with 4k. Bit of a shame really, I thought the best graphics card going would be able to handle it.

I've also noticed that content in 60fps 4K is impossible to run with MadVR for me. Even on NGU low, I get extremely high dropped frames (even more so than 16:9) which makes it impossible to watch anything in 60fps. I'm assuming this is a known limitation of MadVR?

Also, how does the rule below look? I'm trying to setup 4 profiles (2160p-16:9, 2160p-2.35:1, 1080p-16:9, 1080p-2.35:1) each auto selected based on aspect ratio of the movie being played....

if (AR=16:9) and (srcWidth > 1920) "2160p-16:9"
else if (AR=16:9) and ((srcWidth <= 1920) and (srcHeight > 1080)) "2160p-16:9"

else if (AR=”other”) and (srcWidth > 1920) "2160p-2.35:1"
else if (AR=”other”) and ((srcWidth <= 1920) and (srcHeight > 1080)) "2160p-2.35:1"

else if (AR=16:9) and ((srcWidth > 1280) and (srcWidth <= 1920)) "1080p-16:9"
else if (AR=16:9) and ((srcWidth <= 1280) and (srcHeight > 720) and (srcHeight <= 1080)) "1080p-16:9"

else if (AR=”other”) and ((srcWidth > 1280) and (srcWidth <= 1920)) "1080p-2.35:1"
else if (AR=”other”) and ((srcWidth <= 1280) and (srcHeight > 720) and (srcHeight <= 1080)) "1080p-2.35:1"

How will the rule above work if a movie such as Saving Private Ryan is played which is 1.85:1? I'm assuming that's still going to give dropped frames as there is a lot of pixels, so can we adjust the rule to select the "2160p-16:9" profile for 1.85:1 aspect ratio also?
Reply
I think you should try MPC-BE. There is no limitation with a GTX 1080 Ti when it comes to 4K 60 fps. And there are some out there that I know of that are using NGU very high to upscale 1080p -> 4K.

Try downloading MSI Afterburner and resetting the clocks on your GPU to the defaults. And then maybe try a slight overclock. The GPU doesn't seem to be performing properly. Don't do this until you test with another media player to rule out DSPlayer.

As for your rules, I don't think "other" is a legal value. It might work if you leave this blank or perhaps (AR!=16:9). A 1.85:1 movie should qualify as 16:9.

What are everyone's long term plans?

I'm really liking the video quality with MadVR + Kodi.  But if this fork is truly abandoned, then it will start getting more and more outdated over time.  It's already feeling a little chunky for me: few seconds of black screen when starting up or stopping a movie, no netflix / amazon support, random crashes or needs to be restarted to fix a glitch with audio / whatnot.

Is there any alternative out there?  Anything on the horizon that you're considering jumping to?
