Thanks have tried but its the command line stuff im struggling with. Have tried running it from openelec dir but did not work just lost to which dir I should use

If you are using OpenElec then you download a new version and use that. The latest OpenElec contains the latest Kodi 
OpenElec will only update itself within a major release. It will not update itself to a new major release. There you have to download a new version.
