I'm not sure if you do this already, but it often pays to go and have a read of the Sellers forums to get an idea of product support and any major problems users are may be having. The U1 go to thread would be HERE
I will update page #1 when someone does a detailed proper Kodi review on the MINIX U1. In general reading I'm not seeing any outstanding issues with it.
AMLogic devices running Android Lollipop get a very nice speed boost over the older Android KitKat ones. Even your X8-H Plus would perform well with Lollipop if it could be upgraded.
The only obvious question for a basic Kodi media player is, do you need Android at all ?
OpenELEC is quite a bit slicker and more mature as a Kodi based OS.
