Yes you just install the Apps yourself from the Google Play Store. The Sony TV - Amazon Instant Video App will need to be Sideloaded from a USB stick. The link for that App is in Post#1

I got my Shield today and got it setup in record time. Thanks a ton for the timely advice.

The only thing that doesn't work is Amazon Video...I tried sideloading that apk you recommended and it installs fine but when you start it up it just hangs on the welcome screen and you can't login or even get the UI to respond. I'm wondering if maybe it's not compatible with the latest Shield firmware? It auto-updated that on setup (to version 3.3.0 I believe). If this is covered elsewhere in the thread or something, I apologize, please forward me along and I'll dig into it.

Also, since I have your attention, what do you recommend as a stable (and easy to setup) PVR backend for HDHomerun on the Shield? It's not something I'll use a lot but it would be a nice to have.
