The RPi is fine for 1080p mpeg2 / H264 video playback. It's now relatively old, slower hardware vs the AMLogic S9xx boxes. As soon as you strike 10bit HEVC 1080p video content forget about even trying to playback that on a RPi. Its not very future proofed these days but has been impressively pushed as far as it will go.
