I have installed ES File Manager on my Fire TV and using this I can get to the kodi.tv webpage.

Using the standard Fire TV remote I can move on to the kodi webpage and occasionally I can get the page to scroll. I have also (once) managed to get onto the download page where I could see the relevant Android software. however, what I could not do was to select the relevant software as I could not see any pointer.

What am I doing wrong?

It's a bit hard to use ES File Manager's web browser with a remote. I would just throw mirrors.kodi.tv directly into it and then browse the releases folder for Android (you want the "ARM" version). That's much easier to select with just the remote. Otherwise, plug in a USB mouse and use that.
