Movie sets are great but it just uses a random thumbnail from a movie in that set for the main thumbnail.

Is there a name I should give for it to auto select that thumb so I don't have to go through and change 30odd movie sets manually?

There is no native support for it in KODI so you must use and follow the naming conventions for MSAA http://forum.kodi.tv/showthread.php?tid=153502
