Addons Error (7) Cannot connect to server
#1
I had previously posted my problem to the Android forum in error.

I was going to give up and go back to a mythtv front end, but I can't leave it alone. It bugs me that it doesn't work.
Background:
I am unable to download and install plugins.

  1. Ubuntu 14.04 LTS based distros, cleanly installed several attempts to newly partioned HDDs
  2. Clean install of Kodi Jarvis latest stable
  3. Standard add ons such as PVRs install OK and are working to mythtv backend server
  4. Network is working and stable
  5. Internet access is OK
  6. Previously the add on list were blank, however I can now see the available add ons in the list
  7. Attempting to install any add on from the repository results in cannot connect to network server errors. For example, the youtube add on says "invalid """ (double double quote marks)

The debug log section:

mod edit: log snippets removed

BTW, same hardware, Win10, Kodi Jarvis everything including add ons work fine.

This is my last gasp. I don't really want to buy a Windows license so any useful advice gratefully received.

Here you go - yet another brand new install, different PC, same old, same old. This time the add on list is blank again

Enjoy.

Having spent so much time on this without solution can someone categorically confirm that the repos are actually available nd working for Kodi Jarvis/ Ubuntu 14.04 LTS users?

I ask because I have just managed to purge and restore a 'nix image that had Kodi Isengard on it and that repo is working fine.

Thank you

I have no issues with repos with KODI 16 on Ubuntu 15.10 using the Team-XBMC PPA

How did you install KODI?

Looking at the log (and I'm no expert) it seems to be having problems connecting to the server:

Code:
11:04:52 T:139878275733248   DEBUG: CurlFile::Open(0x7f37f2efc460) http://mirrors.kodi.tv/addons/jarvis/addons.xml.gz
11:04:53 T:139878275733248   ERROR: CCurlFile::FillBuffer - Failed: Couldn't connect to server(7)
11:04:53 T:139878275733248   DEBUG: CCurlFile::Open - effective URL: <http://ftp.halifax.rwth-aachen.de/xbmc/addons/jarvis/addons.xml.gz>
11:04:53 T:139878275733248   DEBUG: CRepository 'http://mirrors.kodi.tv/addons/jarvis/addons.xml.gz' is gzip. decompressing
11:04:53 T:139878275733248   ERROR: CRepository: Failed to parse addons.xml. Malformated.
11:04:53 T:139878275733248   ERROR: CRepositoryUpdateJob[repository.xbmc.org] failed to read or parse directory 'http://mirrors.kodi.tv/addons/jarvis/addons.xml.gz'

You mentioned you now have the list of add-ons working but can't install any, could you post a debug log while trying to install one (like YouTube)?

Also check that nothing odd is going on with your DNS services or firewall and try these URLs directly in a browser (if still getting blank LIST, not for problem installing addon):

http://mirrors.kodi.tv/addons/jarvis/addons.xml.gz
http://ftp.halifax.rwth-aachen.de/xbmc/a...ons.xml.gz

Initially I installed on Debian, building Kodi Jarvis (as noted in this and other threads).

When that didn;t work, i.e. no add ons, I went to Ubuntu based distros and then installed Kodi Jarvis from the PPA. No luck, as mentioned in my threads. Tried different hardware, all the same. Installed Kodi on my mythtv backend server (intel), same thing, 'cannot connect to repository', cannot connect to server.

I have tried Kodibuntu, but it's installer seems flawed, locking up on the second page of the installer. Used expert install from the shell interface and see that it complains about no RADEON drivers, which seems stupid given it is at an early part of the install. Gave up.

I have posted debug logs from immediately after clean installs. (see above).

I mentioned that I reinstalled from an image of MythBuntu 14.04 LTS containing Kodi Isengard. It worked fine. Then, as soon as the Jarvis update was installed, it fails as noted.

Making matters worse is that music visualization does not work, going to a black screen. Even setting it not to use visualisation will cause it create a black screen, which ultimately invokes the power saving on the amplifier/screen.

I have pretty much given up now and am using the MythTV front end. I came back mainly to check if those making a fuss about wanting logs actually reported back here, which they don't seem have.

Cheers

SOLVED:
OK, new Lubuntu 15.04 install on same hardware, cleanly partioned HDD.

Installed Kodi.

All good, everything everything working.

To test, repeated the exercise, but using xubuntu 14.04 LTS. Fail; no add ons!

Re-installed Lubuntu 15.04 on same hardware. Working!

Another great Linux Mystery (un)solved.
