Correct, the original script used the iPhone streams as they were the only ones accessible by the XBMC at the time. Since then RTMP support has been added to XBMC, allowing use of the Flash streams instead.

There are 2 H264 streams on the iPlayer website - (1) the low-res H264 HTTP MP4 'streams' as used by the iPhone and (2) the high-res H264 RTMP Flash streams which are served via Flash 9 and above. Unfortunately, the Flash H264 streams (2) don't work on XBMC as the RTMP implementation doesn't support it at the moment. And the iPhone H264 streams (1) are rather low-res, and a huge pain to actually access.
So currently the plugin uses one of two streams, the Flash VP6 stream (the default), or the Flash Spark stream for the Wii (slightly lower quality), as selected by the user in the plugin settings. These are the best streams available to XBMC, but still an improvement over the iPhone streams that were used before, due to improved resolution/quality, and the fact they can be streamed/accessed instantly. Hopefully XBMC will soon work with the Flash H264 RTMP streams, and if/when that happens I'll update the plugin, and we'll get another bump in picture quality.
Not that the current Flash streams are bad - on a 720p screen they're a little blocky, but perfectly watchable!
