Watching live TV
#1
Today (11/27), I tried to watch an NFL football game on Kodi. I couldn't. I really didn't need to as I could have watched in TV. I just wanted to learn how to do it. Maybe it is not possible.

So question 1. Is it possible?

Question 2. If it is possible, then how. I tried under Live TV and under Sports with no luck.

Can someone please explain how. I have until 12/4 @ 1:00 PM EST till the next game. I will try try your suggestions then.

Thanks Confused

pvr (wiki) you need a backend.
first_time_user (wiki) | free content (wiki) | forum rules (wiki) | PVR (wiki) | Debug Log (wiki)

IMPORTANT:
The official Kodi version does not contain any content what so ever. This means that you should provide your own content from a local or remote storage location, DVD, Blu-Ray or any other media carrier that you own. Additionally Kodi allows you to install third-party plugins that may provide access to content that is freely available on the official content provider website. The watching or listening of illegal or pirated content which would otherwise need to be paid for is not endorsed or approved by Team Kodi.

Kodi is a media player, not a content portal. You need to already have access to your live TV content via devices on your home network in order for them to be integrated into Kodi. (Just like Kodi does not come pre-installed with movies, it does not come pre-installed with live TV access.)

The link provided was information on how Kodi integrates various PVR backend (the software on your network that generally interfaces with/consumes live TV content) software into its native interface.

To watch LiveTV or PVR, you need a PVR backend server that communicates with your TV service/hardware. Then via PVR frontend addons Kodi retrieves information
from your PVR backend and sends/receives commands to/from the PVR backend server.

For example, in my setup:

DVB-T USB TV Tuner --> TVHeadend (PVR Backend server) --> TVHeadend Kodi Addon (communicates between Kodi and Backend Server) --> Kodi (the frontend)

Have a look at the Kodi Wiki on PVR/Live TV:

http://kodi.wiki/view/PVR

As others have said, Kodi itself does not provide media content.

You have to add the content via your own collection or via addons.

In my opinion the Live TV settings shouldn't even appear (or be disabled) unless a "Live TV" add on is enabled/connected, this would allow new users to understand that "Live TV" wont work magically and another component is required.

It may reduce a number of support threads asking this very question?

The home menu also defaults to showing Movies, TV Shows, Pictures &c., but users aren't complaining when their Movies list is empty upon a clean install.

Most often the users not understanding how LiveTV works are those who purchased a device with Kodi pre-installed with illegal addons and pirated content.

I guess my point is there are probably "users complaining" about alot of things, I couldn't be arsed to look for more, but this is about Live TV and not Music, Movies etc... and i was trying think how changes to Kodi could assist user behavouir/thinking, why nullify a perfectly sensible suggestion? it adds no value at all. seen this so often on this forum where suggestions (whether good or bad) get shut down, Open source is all about getting the creative juices flowing, isn't it? anyway going off topic to the OP

I'm not sure I agree with this. The situation is similar to purchasing a car that includes a satellite radio tuner: you cannot use the tuner to get satellite radio stations without the requisite subscription to a provider. Kodi is the same way: it provides a method for viewing live TV, but you need a separate service to get that TV in Kodi. Kodi's documentation (in the form of its wiki) is quite clear on this, and if users consulted the documentation or searched for an answer first, then these types of questions would be reduced, too.
