That leads me to the unfortunate assumption that there's probably something wrong with my setup, maybe even the hardware.

Usually you get this "buzzing noise" if passthrough is enabled in audio settings but your TV/receiver/... can't support it.
Navigate to Settings -> System -> Audio and untick the "Allow passthrough" option there.
