I use mmal. I don't have any issue with stalls, stutters, glitches on the audio or video.
I watch mostly hevc and h264 tv shows, with some live TV recordings (MPEG-2).
I'd like to know what the difference is between our setups (and how to reproduce it here).
Possibly there is something different in the encoding of your files. Possibly something in the kodi settings.
Do you have the issue with completely default settings (you can rename .kodi to .kodi_back and reboot to test this)?
